    Description

While other referees blew the whistle, Ernest Quigley used his high-pitched voice to control the game. One of the most respected referees of his era, Quigley was also known for his colorful refereeing style. Athletically gifted, Quigley was a star athlete at the University of Kansas, playing under the legendary James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. During his 40-year career, Quigley officiated ten consecutive AAU national tournaments and logged more than 100,000 miles a year. Quigley served as the supervisor of NCAA Tournament officials from 1940 to 1942. In 1944, Quigley moved off the courts to become director of athletics at Kansas. Also a gifted baseball umpire, Quigley umpired in the National League from 1913 to 1945, including six World Series, most notably the 1919 World Series (Black Sox Scandal) as well as the World Series in 1916, 1921, 1924, 1927, and 1935.
He was the Crew Chief for the 1927 World Series.
Also a member of the NCAA Football Rules Committee from 1946 to 1954.
    He passed away in 1960.
He was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961.
He has been mentioned as a candidate for the Baseball Hall of Fame, but to date has managed to elude induction into Cooperstown.
Offered is a very rare autograph that is one of a less than a handful to surface in the hobby. This almost 5” x
7” page was pulled from Quigley’s own personal 1940 National League rule book (we will be listing the book separately).
We presume he carried this book around during the 1940 season so he marked the book as such (as his personal property).
    He also initialed the page.
Written in super dark Charcoal Pencil!
