Following his retirement from major league baseball at the end of the 1968 season, Mantle, a popular and recognizable figure in the sports world, was signed as a member of the NBC Game of the Week broadcast team. Although he was a gifted broadcaster, Mantle would leave the network to become a first base coach (for the middle three innings only) for the New York Yankees. Mantle, who remained in the position only until the end of the season, would return to the broadcast booth in the 1980s, annuncing selected Yankees games for the Sports Channel. The commentary for the 1970 World Series, which was won by the Cincinnati Reds over the Baltimore Orioles (4-1), was provided for NBC by Curt Gowdy, Tony Kubek, Chuck Thompson and Jim McIntyre.
Known for both his power and speed, switch-hitting outfielder Mickey Mantle (1931-1995) played for the New York from 1951 until his retirement in 1968. In 1956, he won the coveted
    Triple Crown
with 52 homers, 130 RBIs and a .353 batting average and was voted
    MVP
    that season. Mantle was again
    MVP
the following year and for a third time in 1962. Mantle, who played in
    12 World Series championships
    with the Yankees, holds
    World Series career records
for home runs (18), RBIs (40) and runs (42). Known for his "tape measure" homers, "The Commerce Comet" thrilled fans in the 1961 race to beat Babe Ruth's home run season record of 60. Although teammate Roger Maris broke Ruth's record that year with 61, Mantle finished with a respectable 54 homers. He was elected to the
    National Baseball Hall of Fame
in 1974.Lightly creased with folds, not at signatures. ½-inch tears at lower blank margins of both sheets, staple holes at upper left blank corners. Stamped "Valuable Papers File" at lower right margin of first page. Fine condition.
